Mad Men | Aesop’s classic fable “The Wind and the Sun"

If you have been watching AMC’s Mad Men  as religiously as me, you know what a fantastic show it is and probably can’t wait for Sunday evening to come around each week.  This past week was a gem of an episode but what struck me most was the small scene / exchange between Don Draper and Dr. Miller.
During this scene Dr. Miller shares with Don the lesson from Aesop’s classic fable “The Wind and the Sun”.  For those unfamiliar with this fable, it is below for your convenience.
The Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger. Suddenly they saw a traveler coming down the road, and the Sun said: “I see a way to decide our dispute. Whichever of us can cause that traveler to take off his cloak shall be regarded as the stronger. You begin.” So the Sun retired behind a cloud, and the Wind began to blow as hard as it could upon the traveler. But the harder he blew the more closely did the traveler wrap his cloak round him, till at last the Wind had to give up in despair. Then the Sun came out and shone in all his glory upon the traveler, who soon found it too hot to walk with his cloak on.
When Don Draper asks what this means, Dr. Miller simply responds that “kindness, gentleness, and persuasion win where force fails”.  These words are important to remember as you are conversing with others via social media.  You will achieve greater results if you “share your warmth” like the sun, then trying to “impress people with your strength” like the wind.
Three Examples of “Acting like the Sun”
  1. Create honest and complete social media profiles – people want to connect with other people.
  2. Share your knowledge and interests but remember to” promote” others more frequently than yourself – it isn’t all about you.
  3. Listen and engage the community with respect – no one likes a “bully”.
